THIS 2 MIN TASK WILL MAKE YOU A BETTER INSTRUCTOR
When did you last take a moment to focus on improving your teaching skills? Most of us don’t do this as much as we should… let’s face it - life just gets in the way.
But improving your teaching doesn’t have to be time consuming... and I’ve got a simple hack for you straight from the playbook of the top Instructors in the industry! It's a goodie and I promise it will deliver massive payback immediately!
If you’ve started teaching virtually, maybe you’re worried you aren’t engaging enough through a screen? Are you struggling with the lack of class feedback you get on virtual? Or maybe you just want to improve your live teaching presence?
Whatever it is...the answer is the same: film yourself!
Video self-reflection is the single greatest tool for maintaining quality - both for your in person and virtual classes. Do what all the top players in the industry do, and force yourself to watch your classes back. Over my 20 year career teaching internationally across hundreds of professional videos, I've done this A LOT... and I've also trained 1,000s of Instructors to do this!
It doesn’t have to be a full class - you can watch the start of one, the middle or end of another. The more data points you have the better! Just set your phone or tablet up for a section of the class, and press record. Watching back, you will immediately notice things you can improve - whether it be a move you’re not quite executing, or a “verbal tic” that you’ve developed (where you repeat the same cue or word over and over the same way we say “um” when we speak in public). If teaching virtually - watch your positioning within the camera frame and the tone and volume of your voice.
YOUR TASK:
Starting with your next class, keep a simple log of your video reflections:
3 things I did well; and
3 things I could improve.
If you’re new to teaching, do this every class. If you’re experienced, maybe just once a week.
At the start, everyone feels the same - uncomfortable and awkward. But this will pass and EVERY Instructor I have worked with has made noticeable and significant improvements to their teaching, almost immediately.
Trust me - this simple, 2 minute task will reap massive rewards and create meaningful change for you and your classes.
Happy filming,
