EXPERT ADVICE: With Marcus Benson

Meet Marcus, a Group Fitness superstar and the newest member of the SH1FT Fitness presenting team. You’ll get to see Marcus presenting some workouts later in 2022!

We’ve asked Marcus a few questions so that you can get to know him better, and if you read to the end, he’s given you his top tip to make YOU a better teacher. Marcus has taken on some of the biggest instructing challenges in the world - including being an International Master Trainer & Presenter for Les Mills for ten years. He know's exactly what it takes to deliver an inspiring class and we are SO EXCITED to have him present our upcoming workouts 🌟⁠

Tell us about your career so far...

I've been in the industry for the last 17 years, starting out at Champneys Henlow as my first job in fitness. Throughout that time I've been a personal trainer which I still currently do, had group exercise management roles, and worked as a freelance group exercise instructor at various different chains. A big part of my career was being an International Master Trainer & Presenter for Les Mills where I featured on multiple Body Pump and GRIT filmings as well as Les Mills Sprint. This time was spent delivering initial module training, coaching and developing other trainers and presenters, improving the quality of assessments, developing and enhancing the training we offer. For the last 2 years I've been Head of Fitness at énergie fitness which is a franchise business and we have 90 clubs across UK & Ireland. Everything under the umbrella of Fitness falls into this role, for example, creating new group ex products, delivering and creating training, creating new boutique spaces within our clubs, equipment that goes into our gyms, online fitness and much more!


Why did you get in to fitness?

My dream of professional football didn't work out, so I finished my college studies and wanted to stay in fitness and thought personal training would be a good option based on what i'd learnt at college in sports science. It was something I enjoyed, also I wanted to be able to coach individuals and have a positive impact on them. I had a negative experience when I was playing football full time and wanted to ensure others didn't get a negative experience in health & fitness.


Tell us something that people don't know about you...

I played for England U15 & U17s in Football, in my first U15s game i was in the squad against Wales where Wayne Rooney was in the same squad. I love Harry Potter films!


What are the highlights of your career so far?

Playing for England and wearing the England shirt was a very proud moment representing my country.

Body Pump 97 filming which was to 2000 people, this felt super unreal and it was an amazing experience. I'll always remember my first filmings of Body Pump 91 & GRIT as they were fantastic releases but so much fun with the teams in each filming.


What do you like about SH1FT Fitness?

The ability to be flexible with the workouts, using your own music within your classes. What is a massive positive is the simplicity to learning the workouts, especially when you haven't got much time. The workouts are forward thinking, modern, creative and super enjoyable to teach because of this.
